Airbnb Guest Bath

Casco Histórico, Santiago, Chile

Located in a historic neighborhood in downtown Santiago, I loved the idea of reviving a forgotten second bathroom in an old apartment building at the heart of town. Since it would be primarily enjoyed by visitors, many new to Chile, we wanted to take inspiration from the Casco itself which conjugates a diversity of time periods and architectural styles, especially focusing on the older surviving structures like the Catedral de Santiago which you could see from one of the adjacent room windows.

The bathroom is restful with a touch of grotto in a mixture of natural stone and ornamental ceramic, and furnished almost entirely with the family’s original fixtures. The lack of natural light was embraced as a feature allowing for warm, dim light as a contrast to the master bathroom which is naturally lit. The cracked tiles from the infamous 2010 earthquake inspired the floor design while we were allowed to expose the cracks left by this event on the outside walls and restore the original wallpaper. Minimal decorative items were placed such as an adorable family Spanish-French scrap book and complimentary body care made in Chile.
